HOW THE RACE WORKS
1. THE HARE
One balloon launches first.
2. THE HOUNDS
20+ balloons chase the Hare.
3. THE TARGET
The Hare lands and marks an “X.”
4. THE DROP
Hound pilots try to drop their bean bag closest to the X.
5. WE HAVE A WINNER!
That makes the event sound much more exciting.
Bring a blanket or some chairs to the park and enjoy as the balloons begin inflating for launch between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., weather permitting. Refreshments and food are available for purchase.
Park Drive will be closed for both events and spectators are encouraged to park on Lion’s Drive or in the New Haven High School and Municipal Swimming Pool parking lots.
** PLEASE NOTE:
The flight window for THE RACE is between 3 and 5:30 PM. Our goal is always to launch as scheduled, however, exact launch time is weather dependent. The pilot team monitors wind conditions & flight path details in coordination with the national weather service, our pilots and air traffic control.
